Integrating EMDR 2.0 into Clinical Practice: Advanced Training and Consultation in EMDR 2.0
EMDR 2.0 is an approach that builds on standard EMDR therapy by emphasizing specific theoretical considerations and practical strategies, including the use of working memory–taxing tasks. The aim of EMDR 2.0 is to optimize therapeutic processes within trauma-focused treatment. Developed by Ad de Jongh, PhD, and Suzy Matthijssen, PhD, EMDR 2.0 has been examined in multiple scientific studies and applied within the treatment of complex PTSD, including intensive treatment settings. Ongoing research across different populations and symptom presentations continues to explore the clinical application of the EMDR 2.0 approach.
The EMDR 2.0 approach highlights the role of working memory taxation during the desensitization of emotionally charged memories. EMDR 2.0 methods focus on targeting highly activated memories related to client symptoms whenever possible. The memory-taxation techniques are intended to support clients in tolerating the reprocessing of emotionally charged memories, including in complex clinical presentations, while fostering engagement and motivation within treatment. The approach also includes additional strategies that may reduce the need for extensive preparatory interventions prior to reprocessing.
As interest in EMDR 2.0 continues to grow, many EMDR-trained clinicians seek opportunities for further education, consultation, and professional exchange to support the integration of this approach into their clinical work. In response to this need, advanced training and consultation pathways have been developed to provide structured educational opportunities for clinicians wishing to deepen their understanding and application of EMDR 2.0. This growing interest also points to the need for networks of clinicians familiar with this approach.
Advanced EMDR 2.0 Training and Consultation Pathway
The Advanced EMDR 2.0 Training and Consultation Pathway is designed for EMDR-trained clinicians who wish to further develop their clinical use of EMDR 2.0 within an educational and supervised learning framework. This pathway focuses on advanced training, consultation, and reflective practice related to the application of EMDR 2.0 techniques.
Participation in this pathway includes completion of advanced EMDR 2.0 training components and documented participation in supervision and consultation sessions. These activities are intended to support learning, clinical reflection, and the ongoing integration of EMDR 2.0 methods into practice.
Upon completion of the outlined training and documentation requirements, clinicians may apply for the Certificate of Completion: Advanced EMDR 2.0 Training. This certificate documents the successful completion of advanced training and associated educational activities. It does not constitute professional accreditation, certification of clinical competence, or EMDR Europe practitioner, consultant, or trainer status.
The requirements for applying for the Certificate of Completion: Advanced EMDR 2.0 Training are as follows:
- Complete EMDR Basic Training that is recognized by an official EMDR association (for example, EMDRAA, EMDRIA, and EMDR Europe).
- Complete the EMDR 2.0 Basic Training and EMDR 2.0 Special Techniques Training (including the skills of Blind to therapist, FLASH 1.0, titration techniques, EMD bomb, Flashforward & Mental Video Check).
- Document at least 30 clinical sessions in which EMDR 2.0 techniques were applied, involving a minimum of five patients.
- Provide documentation of completed supervision sessions (this form). (Supervision documentation can be completed during individual or group consultation with Suzy Matthijssen, PhD.). To register or inquire further about consultation with Dr. Matthijssen, use this link.
