Step-by-step guidance for administering and interpreting the gold standard in PTSD assessment

As a trauma therapist, you treat PTSD regularly. But how confidently can you assess the finer details of each client's symptoms, document and justify your diagnosis, target the symptoms that matter most, and track progress as treatment unfolds? This workshop gives you a structured, reliable way to do exactly that.

The Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) is the gold standard for PTSD assessment. The CAPS-5 is a 30-item structured interview, typically taking 45 to 60 minutes, that lets you make a current (past-month) or lifetime PTSD diagnosis and assess symptoms over the past week. Alongside the 20 DSM-5 PTSD symptoms, it covers the onset and duration of symptoms, subjective distress, the impact on social and occupational functioning, change since a previous administration, overall response validity, overall severity, and the dissociative subtype (depersonalization and derealization). Each symptom comes with standardized questions and probes, and administration starts from an identified index traumatic event. The Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5) is recommended alongside the Criterion A inquiry already built into the CAPS-5.

Across the day you'll learn to administer the CAPS-5 and put the results to work in treatment planning and evaluation, with detailed guidance on the nuances of administering, scoring, and interpreting this diagnostic tool, plus a live demonstration.

What you'll gain

  • A clear, step-by-step method for administering the CAPS-5, the gold standard in PTSD assessment
  • Guidance on scoring, interpreting, and documenting each cluster of DSM-5 PTSD symptoms
  • A live demonstration of the interview in practice
  • Practical know-how for using results in diagnosis, treatment planning, and progress evaluation
