Masterclass: Treating Traumatic Grief: from guilt to integration
Mbemba witnessed the brutal murder of his mother during a rebel raid.
He lives with an unbearable burden: “I should have saved her.”
For many, loss is part of life. But when grief is intertwined with trauma, it can become something entirely different - persistent, overwhelming, and deeply disabling. Individuals may develop prolonged grief disorder, often accompanied by PTSD and depression, especially after losses due to violence, suicide, or war.
How do you, as a clinician, effectively reach and treat this complex form of suffering?
In this masterclass, you will be introduced to Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy for Traumatic Grief (BEPTG) - an evidence-informed, structured treatment approach that directly targets the interplay between trauma and loss.Â
This is not just theory.Â
You will leave with practical tools you can immediately apply in your clinical work.
You will:
- Gain a clear understanding of traumatic grief and its clinical presentation
- Learn how to apply powerful interventions such as memory objects, structured writing tasks, and therapeutic rituals
- Discover why BEPTG is particularly effective across diverse cultural backgrounds
- Experience, through a (live) role-play, the impactful technique of an imaginary conversation with the deceased - specifically designed to address intense guilt and unresolved emotions
Learning objectives.
After this masterclass, participants will be able to:
- Understand the core principles of Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy for Traumatic Grief (BEPTG) and apply them in a culturally sensitive way
- Apply the imaginary conversation with the deceased as an intervention for intense guilt and unresolved grief
- Effectively use mourning rituals as a therapeutic tool within grief treatment
