Integrating EMDR 2.0 into Clinical Practice and steps to be an EMDR 2.0 Approved Practitioner

EMDR 2.0 is a method of enhancing certain aspects of standard EMDR therapy and emphasizing various theoretical considerations and practical strategies to achieve optimal clinical results. Ad de Jongh, PhD and Suzy Matthijssen, PhD have been the originators and primary developers of EMDR 2.0 which is validated in numerous scientific studies. Research findings have been based on clinical experience with the treatment of patients with complex PTSD, including those receiving intensive treatment. Ongoing research findings with different participant groups and on different symptomatology, further demonstrate the enhanced efficiency of the EMDR 2.0 approach.

The EMDR 2.0 approach emphasizes the value of working memory-taxing tasks when desensitizing emotionally laden memories. EMDR 2.0 methods prioritize the importance of desensitizing the most activated memories related to client symptoms whenever possible, and the memory-taxation techniques help clients tolerate the reprocessing of emotionally charged memories even in the most challenging patients. The EMDR 2.0 approach includes various other strategies which build client confidence and motivation while reducing the need for extended resourcing before reprocessing.

As increasing numbers of EMDR clinicians are trained in EMDR 2.0, there has been a growing call for ongoing training, consultation, and other ways to receive support and guidance, as clinicians integrate this approach into their practice. In addition, many therapists are seeking ways to officially validate their growing expertise in using EMDR 2.0. Employers increasingly seek practitioners trained in advanced and effective trauma therapies like EMDR 2.0 and clients and other therapists are often looking for EMDR clinicians with 2.0 expertise. These and a number of other reasons point to the need to have networks of clinicians skilled in this approach.

Becoming an EMDR 2.0 Approved Practitioner

Below are additional details regarding the pathway for clinicians to develop and demonstrate competence in the use of EMDR 2.0. At this time, this process will be overseen by EMDR 2.0 originators, Ad de Jongh, PhD and Suzy Matthijssen, PhD. Through the steps outlined below, clinicians will be able to achieve the designation of EMDR 2.0 Approved Practitioner.

Clinicians who complete the steps to achieving the EMDR 2.0 Practitioner designation will build and demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills, ensuring that they can confidently integrate these methods into their practice. Currently the steps to becoming an EMDR 2.0 Practitioner include:
